The Martinitoren rises over everything - squares, rooftops, the low flat light of the north - while the city beneath it goes about its day, indifferent to the monument overhead. Eli Dijkers worked the streets of this northern student city over several years, drawn less to its landmarks than to what happens at pavement level: a dog crossing a shadow, a child lifted into a kiss, bicycles stacked against the cold and one abandoned in the branches of a tree. Shot in black and white, Dijkers' work is interested in the friction between the Groningen of the postcard and the one that lives here year round - the weather, the brick, the unguarded moment that arrives before the person does.
