On both sides of the Bosphorus - in the markets, on the ferries, in the streets of a city that has spent seventeen centuries refusing to belong entirely to one world or another - Eli Dijkers followed the daily rhythms of a metropolis where the call to prayer competes with the noise of traffic and the strait between two continents is crossed by commuters twice a day without a second thought. Dijkers' work is less interested in Istanbul's monumental history than in what happens at street level - the glance, the gesture, the light on the water at dusk - in a city that exhausts and enchants in equal measure.
